VT Country Store Matriarch dies at 99
It is with great sadness that we have learned of the passing of Mildred Ellen Orton. Mildred Ellen was an alumna of Kinhaven and a founder of The Vermont Country Store, the famous “purveyors of the practical and hard to find.” Kinhaven was fortunate to be able to honor Mildred Ellen in a ceremony on campus last summer and to acknowledge the many ways she has contributed to the school over the years. She was 99 years old. In the words of Jerry T. Bidlack, director emeritus, “Her spirit, energy and enthusiasm resound throughout our campus.”
